Fleet Telematics: Frequently Asked Questions
-
Short answer: Fleet telematics is technology that tracks, analyses, and manages vehicle data in real time.
Explanation: It uses GPS, onboard sensors, and communication networks to collect information about vehicle location, driver behaviour, fuel use, and maintenance needs. The data helps fleet managers make better operational and safety decisions.
-
Short answer: It connects a hardware device in each vehicle to cloud-based software that turns data into insights.
Explanation: Devices such as Sensium’s TRACKbox units transmit information via mobile and satellite networks to Sensium’s management platform, where fleet operators can view live locations, set alerts, and generate compliance reports.
-
Short answer: Sensium offers world-first connectivity through SpaceX Starlink Direct-to-Cell and locally engineered hardware.
Explanation: Unlike standard 4G-only systems, Sensium’s TRACKbox 4 seamlessly switches between cellular and satellite networks, ensuring coverage across Australia and New Zealand - even in regions with no mobile signal. Sensium is designed and manufactured in Brisbane, with sovereign data storage and support.
-
Short answer: TRACKbox 4 is Sensium’s latest telematics unit combining 4G and Starlink satellite connectivity.
Explanation: It provides uninterrupted vehicle tracking, safety monitoring, and remote access without bulky external satellite gear. It also integrates long-range duress pendants so drivers can call for help even when outside their vehicle.
-
Short answer: It eliminates communication blackspots by using satellites that connect directly to vehicles.
Explanation: Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service allows TRACKbox 4 to send data and messages even hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town. This ensures continuous visibility, compliance, and driver safety for remote fleets.
-
Short answer: Fleets across mining, logistics, agriculture, utilities, and government sectors use Sensium for safety and accountability.
Explanation: Sensium’s solutions suit any organisation operating vehicles or plant equipment across large or remote areas, from councils and emergency services to corporate and hire fleets.
-
Short answer: It monitors risky driving and provides emergency support in real time.
Explanation: Sensium’s system records speed, harsh braking, and fatigue indicators, alerting managers to dangerous behaviour. The built-in duress pendant and automatic alerts mean drivers are never out of reach in an emergency.
-
Short answer: Yes—by improving utilisation, maintenance scheduling, and fuel efficiency.
Explanation: Live data identifies under-used vehicles, detects idling or speeding, and ensures timely servicing. These small optimisations add up to significant savings in large fleets.
-
Short answer: Sensium Connect+ is the cloud platform that controls vehicles, drivers, and data.
Explanation: It includes modules for Driver ID, Pool Vehicle Booking, and Grey Fleet Privacy Mode. The system links directly to TRACKbox devices for seamless access control, trip logging, and compliance reporting.
-
Short answer: All data is encrypted and stored on Australian servers to meet government data sovereignty standards.
Explanation: Sensium adheres to strict privacy protocols, giving fleet managers control over what information is recorded and when - particularly for grey-fleet or personal-use vehicles.
-
Short answer: Yes - Sensium integrates through open APIs and partnerships with leading telematics platforms.
Explanation: The system can link to HR, maintenance, or fuel-card systems, and it partners with other fleet telematics providers to create unified reporting across mixed fleets.
-
Short answer: Real-time dashboards and automated reports covering utilisation, safety, and compliance.
Explanation: Managers can track live status, set performance KPIs, and export reports for audits or regulatory submissions, including Chain of Responsibility documentation.
-
Short answer: It improves accountability, sustainability, and asset utilisation.
Explanation: Sensium’s systems support transparency and safety compliance across council departments, helping demonstrate value to ratepayers while reducing emissions through smarter vehicle use.
-
Short answer: Sensium automatically switches to Starlink satellite communication.
Explanation: There is no data loss or manual intervention required - the TRACKbox 4 will back-fill data and if using using Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell network, continue to transmit position, safety, and alert data.
-
Short answer: Contact Sensium’s Brisbane team for a tailored demonstration.
Explanation: Sensium specialists can assess your fleet size, connectivity challenges, and compliance needs, then recommend the right combination of TRACKbox hardware and Sensium Connect+ features.

Effectively, there are two different types: the $175 GPS tracker that is a great entry-level option and our Australian-Made TRACKbox which is a far more powerful option. The TRACKbox allows you to add-on extra features, it's more secure, more accurate and requires professional installation.
-
With the $175 GPS tracker, there are two options: DIY and professional installation.
The DIY option is literally a plug and play. We can show you how to do it with a video or a guide book.
The professional installation is a hardwired option that connects directly to your vehicle's computer. You do get more information about the vehicle with this option, and drivers can't remove it.
